Wireless sensor nodes for freight trains condition monitoring based on geo-localized vibration measurements

While rail freight transportation is gradually becoming a crucial asset in the context of decarbonization transport sector, new standards and requirements this field aim at improving safety reliability vehicles infrastructure. From perspective, Condition Monitoring Based Maintenance are essential tools to improve systems through use in-service instrumented vehicles. On contrary high-speed applications, trains actually not provided with any monitoring able carry out kind analyses. In context, an innovative hybrid system composed by wireless sensor nodes gateway was developed be suitably mounted on wagon. Sensor nodes, power supplied solar energy, synthetic indices from vibration measurements, while acquires correlated GPS odometry information. order take advantage acquired data, software based geo-localization algorithm created for applications correlate data railway line mileage. A campaign allowed test real wagon acquire many experimental data. Using collected paper shown how can used perform diagnostic activities Moreover, it demonstrated that relying only information sufficient get enough accurate georeferenced applications. This paves way future development completely condition both vehicle infrastructure minimizing impact vehicle.
